Speakers, podcasters, teachers, and students all ask the same question: how long will this script take to say out loud? This free speaking time calculator answers it instantly, and doubles as a words to minutes calculator for essays, articles, and video scripts.
$ speaking time = words / words per minute. A 1500-word script at 150 wpm takes exactly 10 minutes. Silent reading uses the average adult rate of 238 wpm. The teleprompter and video-script estimate assumes an effective pace 10% slower than your speaking pace, leaving room for pauses, emphasis, and transitions.
Most speakers talk between 130 and 160 words per minute. Conversational speech lands near 130 wpm, a rehearsed presentation averages about 150 wpm, and an energetic delivery can reach 180 wpm. For a first estimate, 150 wpm is the standard choice.
A 5-minute speech is about 750 words at an average pace of 150 wpm. A slow, deliberate delivery needs only about 550 words, while a fast delivery can fit about 900. Use the pace table above to see the numbers for your own speed.
